What Causes Twitching Thumb And Pain In The Shoulder Area?

Can you have tentinus on you wrist. Something that comes up and is a hard knot and causes your thumb to twitch and pain running up your arm to your shoulder. The pain comes and goes. It has woke me up at night and caused me to take an aspirin. I thought tentinitus was something that takes years to develop.

Hello,

Pain and tingling sensation in the thumb radiating towards shoulder may be probably because of any one of the following:
1) Carpal tunnel syndrome
2) Brachial plexus neuritis
3) Cervical spondylitis
4) Cervical radiculopathy

Only with thorough examination and few tests like:
1) MRI cervical spine
2) EMG
3) X-ray wrist

Help to arrive at a definitive diagnosis
Treatment depends upon the cause. Few treatment options are as follows:
1) Pain relief with NSAIDs like ibuprofen daily twice for 1 week
2) Opioid can also be taken for pain relief in the place of NSAIDs
3) To avoid gastric irritation, tab. Pantop 40 is to be taken before food.
4) Neuro-modulators like tab. Pregabalin 75mg can be taken daily once for 2 weeks
5) Physical therapy is advised to strengthen the muscles and reduce pain

If your symptoms don't subside with the above treatment , kindly consult an orthopedic surgeon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

The following are few probable causes of your symptoms of thumb twitch and pain along the arm and shoulder:
1) Carpal tunnel syndrome
2) Acute Compartment Syndrome
3) Cervical Disc Disease
4) Cervical Myofascial Pain
5) Cervical Spondylosis
6) Diabetic Neuropathy
7) Ischemic Monomelic Neuropathy
8) Lyme Disease
9) Mononeuritis Multiplex
10) Multiple Sclerosis
11) Neoplastic Brachial Plexopathy
12) Overuse Injury

Treatment depends upon the cause of the symptoms. To those who come to my clinic with similar symptoms, i recommend the following:
1) Pain relief by NSAIDs like ibuprofen, Naproxen and Aceclofenac.
2) Avoid NSAIDs if you have the following: Heart failure, peptic ulcer disease
3) You can use opioids like Hydrocodone, Oxycodone and Tramadol
4) You can also take pregabalin 75 mg for 10-14 days
5) To avoid gastric irritation, tab. Pantop 40 mg to be taken before food
6) Stationary biking, cycling, or any other exercise that puts strain on the wrists probably should be avoided
7) The use of modalities (in particular therapeutic ultrasound) may provide short-term relief

If the pain doesn't subside even with the above treatment, you may consult an orthopedic surgeon for detailed clinical examination and few tests if necessary that would help to find specific diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
