Hi,

As you stated, an infection may be present. The cold is caused by a virus and this can cause fever with chills (the feeling as though you are cold), fatigue and joint pain. With the severity of your symptoms, you may have the flu and not just the cold. Chest pain can occur as a result of the illness itself and may also be due to persistent coughing.

If you feel very unwell, you should consider seeing your doctor for an assessment of treatment. Some persons with the flu need intensive treatment. If you are asthmatic, you should be seen.

Home treatment entails:

(1) rest
(2) fluids
(3) cough suppressant/decongestant/antihistamine cough medications - these are over the counter cough and cold medications
(4) paracetamol
(5) if the cough is wet, medication to break up the mucus may also be needed that is emucomyst, bisolvan, guaifenesin

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
