What Causes Throbbing Sensation In Neck Along With Headaches?

There is a vein on the left side of my neck that I thought was just a result of heavy lifting with book bags and things like that. When I rub or massage it out, the throbbing is quite sharp and it seems to connect to the left side of my head. When I have headaches, this pain is very strongly felt.
