What Causes Thickening Under The Tongue?

My sister mentioned today that she had for the past two to three weeks a feeling of thickening
under the tongue, for some reason she looked at it, not sure if it was bothering her and noticed
a black spot under the tongue I beleive on the floor of the tongue.
What is this?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Thickening under tongue could be an infection or inflammation of the minor salivary gland or presence of a cyst or tumor in the floor of the mouth. It could be even nothing and just a vague feeling that may disappear after a while. A black spot under the tongue could be melanin pigmentation or presence of a prominent vein.

However, as your sister distinctly feels the thickening, I would advise to go to a dentist once for physical examination and ruling out if there is really presence of some pathology.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
