What Causes The COPD Patient Stop Breathing When External Oxygen Is Supplied?

A patient was admitted to the hospital with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. His PO2was 55 and PCO2 was 65. A new resident orders 54% oxygen via the venturi mask. One hour later, after the oxygen was placed, the nurse finds the patient with no respiration or pulse. She calls for a Code Blue and begins cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). In COPD patient there is base line CO2 retention. You can also see his ABG report in which pco2 is 65 which is high. N this high CO2 and low O2 gives central drive for respiration. So when we give this patient high flow oxygen this central drive got diminished and respiration slows down. Which causes co2 retention and this further deteriorate consciousness and patient goes in CO2 narcosis.
