What Causes Testicular Swelling And Urethral Inflammation With Elevated WBC Count?

Hi my boyfriend and I had intercourse recently. But he found out that his left testicle was swollen and his urethra inflamed. He went to urgent care this morning and was given anti-biotics. They told him his WBC counts are high after drawing blood, and it s probably an infection. But he won t know what it is until the next 5 days. This is my first time having sex, so it can t be an STD, and he s also free of STDs. But could it be a UTI of STI? Or worse, a virus? It doesn t hurt when he urinates, it s just that he feels a slight chill pain down there. I still don t understand because we used a condom every time. I know they re not 100% effective, but what are the chance of getting an infection? Any kind of feedback would be helpful. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, thanks for posting on HCM.
From the symptoms you mentioned it looks like he is having ‘Epididymo-orchitis’ which is inflammation of epididymis with or without testis involvement.
He might have got it from urinary tract infection. In males, usually the urinary tract infection has more effects as compared to females.
It can be caused due to ascending of bacteria from the urinary tract from urethra.
As he is already being started on antibiotic, it will take care of infection. He should be well hydrated so as to not cause burning during passing urine.
Use of scrotal support will also help in decreasing the pain in testis. Maintain hygiene and keep the area clean and dry will help in faster recovery.
If you have any more query kindly revert me back.
Thank you
