What Causes Swollen, Painful And Itching Eyelids?

Periodically, I wake up with very swollen eyelids. As the week progresses they go from puffy and red to scaly and itchy and often form painful cracks in the eyelids. It takes about a week for this to go away. I have seen allergists, dermatologists, ophthalmologist and my GP and none of them can come up with a cause. This happens at least once a month or more and if very painful and disabling.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The itching eyelids is usually caused by an allergy. I recommend to use artificial tears to clean the conjunctiva. I also recommend to use an antihistamine such as Cetirizine 10 mg daily to relieve the itching.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
