What Causes Swollen Joints In The Hands?

My son suffers from swollen joints in hands. He s 30. Single, has a beer rarely. Works full-time. Has diagnosed with some gout in the past and has had a rx of Indocin. That doesn t always help. The knuckles are swollen enough that it s hard to write. He has done a lot of reading and research online and having trouble trying to find what foods to avoid etc. Going to clinic doesn t always help just cost money and doesn t get any relief.

Hello

Thank you for writing on HCM.

As you said your son was already diagnosed with Gout, knuckle inflammation is synonymous with it and perfectly fits the diagnosis.

Probably his treatment was not complete. He may have developed what is called a tophi.

In our OPD setups we first do a Sr Uric Acid test to confirm diagnosis, and then use Tab Orthocox 1-0-0 x 30 days, Tab Beepan D 1-0-0 x 30 days, Tab Prednisolone 20mg 1-0-1 x 7 days.

Avoid eating liver, kidney, sweetbreads, brain, sardines, meat extracts, lobster. No Alcohol. Consult a physician before taking any diuretics or Salicylates. Use less amount of meat, poultry, fish, peas, beans and lentils, asparagus, chiku, custard apple, mushrooms, pulses and whole grain cereals.

I understand that the disease is debilitating, but if proper treatment is taken along with precautions, symptoms can be overridden.
Wish your son a very good luck

Thanks
