What Causes Swollen Gums That Appear Red In A Patient With Tonsillitis?

Hi,about 2 or 3 days ago I have really badly swollen tonsills and i know know its tosillitis but the biggest problem of all is that my gums are really red and i cant eat any food because it starts to bleed and i cant even brush my teeth properly either and my gims are growing in to the gaps of the top of my teeth,so I was just wondering if its linked tonsillitis and what i think a gum infection. Thanks

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain swollen tonilis can be due to either bacterial or viral infection and is commonly bacterial infection (Strep infection) but in case if it is associated with flu like symtoms it can be viral in nature ..

Swollen gums can be due to infection in gums which is caused due to poor oral hygiene and deposits on teeth leading to bacterial infection which causes inflammation and swelling and bleeding are the signs of inflammation and the condition is known as GINGIVITIS..

I would suggest you to consult a dentist and get evaluated and in case of gingivitis professional cleaning of the teeth known as scaling has to be done followed by antibiotics like amoxicillin and metronidazole and topical antimicrobial ointments and gum paints can provide relief..
Doing salt water gargles can help..

For tonsillitis if it is due to bacteria antibiotics should be taken..

In case of viral infection symptomatic treatment to relieve the symptoms is done as antiviral medicine does not help in curing the infection..

For both bacterial and viral infection of tonsils few common treatments are:Do warm saline gargles..
Throat lozenges has to be taken..
In case of pain anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen should be taken..
Drink plenty of water preferably luke warm to maintain hydration and relieve throat..
Avoid hard and spicy food..

Hope this information helps..
