What Causes Swollen And Tender Breasts, Dizziness, Spotting And Nausea Post Tubal Ligation?

I am a 32 year old female that had a tubal ligation done in 2012 with the filshie clip. for the last two months my breasts have grown a cup size, areolas have gotten bigger, and are swollen or puffy in relaxed state or when warm, breast and nipple tenderness, headaches and occasional dizzy spells, nausea after eating, and easily irritated mood. Two weeks ago I had an abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound that indicated everything is normal and not pregnant. Pelvic exam and tests came back normal. Last two periods were spotting and I am currently on cycle day 43. Before my spotting periods I was at a 31 day cycle like clockwork. I started vitamins a month before my periods started going wacky. Other than that, my lifestyle and eating habits haven t changed. What should I ask to be tested for to find out what s going on with my body?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Most causes of pain in the breast are benign and not serious. There are a number of harmless causes for breast pain and tenderness that may primarily be related to changes in hormone levels.

These can include:Menstruation and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Mastitis, Menopause and Fibrocystic Breast Tissue which is most common.

Fibrocystic breasts are not necessarily linked to cancer, and the lumps are fluid-filled cysts rather than a mass of cells.

However, it is advisable to do breast ultrasound and mammography just to be sure and start regular follow up of possible cysts.

In case of redness, fever and progressive pain this may indicate abscess and then it should be surgically drained or evacuated by a needle under control of ultrasound.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
