What Causes Swelling, Warmness, Pain And Dryness In Upper Lip?

Hi--I woke up with a swollen upper lip 5 days ago. I thought perhaps insect or spider bite, but there was no sign of that, and it got worse over the next few days. Also no food allergies in my history. Now not as swollen, but both lips are hot and painful, feel dry and burned, and are a bit swollen. In the past month I had a felon on my finger treated and got a staph infection on the skin around it. Took antibiotics for a week. The staph recurred slightly on my finger some days before the lip swelling. Could it be staph affecting my lips, and what should I do? I took antibiotics for the felon, and had numerous side effects, so am not eager to repeat that. thank you.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain swelling of lips along with splitting, redness, itching and burning seems to be most probably due to allergic reaction to some unknown allergen..
Few common causes of allergic reaction can be allergic reaction to any food or medicine, lip cosmetics and other things like poison ivy, leather, latex etc..
Other causes that can cause similar symptoms can be staph infection, fungal infection etc..
Consult an Allergist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like microscopy of the scrapings from lips and allergic testing like Prick test, Patch test, RAST test, food challenge test can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly..
You can be advised Oral and injectable antihistamines or anti allergics like Benadryl or Allegra, Steroids..
An Immunotherapy can also be instilled that will reduce severity and duration of the reaction..
As of now take anti Allergics like Fexofenadine (Allegra), do cool compresses on lips and take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
