What Causes Swelling In The Legs While On Metformin, Amlodipine And Quinapril?

I m Type 2 Diabetic, Hodgkins Lymphoma survivor after stem cell procedure in 2008. Recently started experiencing severe swelling in feet, ankles and legs and 20 lb weight gain over 6 months. Exercise has declined due to foot pain (neuropathy ). I take metformin, amlodipine, insulin, simvastatin, amitriptyline and quinapril . Could any of these medications be causing the edema or weight gain, or can the combinations not be interacting properly ?

Hello,

Thank you for your question. Chronic Diabetes if not good control, the complications are retinopathy(eyes disease), kidney disease(neprhopathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), heart attack, stroke and vessel blockage in the extremity. Severe swelling in feet, ankles and legs can be cause from chronic kidney disease, heart failure that are the result for diabetes complication. Hypertension not good control also cause heart failure and kidney disease.

Amlodipine also can cause edema because of its increase hydrostatic pressure result from arteriolar dilation.

Amitriptyline can cause weight gain in some case.

The combination drug interaction, serious one is Amlodipine and Simvastatin. Your doctor should be careful with the dose of Simvastatine combination with Amlodipine because it can cause muscle damage. Simvastatine limited dose should be 20mg per day.

I hope these are helpful answer for you.

Best regards,
Dr.Raksmey
