What Causes Swelling In The Leg And Ankle?

I was diagnosed with asthma onset my allergies and copd. I am on several meds, although I think the diagnosis isn t completely accurate. My left leg swells around the ankle. I can t remember exactly how I got a cut on the lower part of my leg, but it doesn t seem to heal very fast. It is red around it and often thumps when I ve either stood on my feet too long or sat too long. The Dr. gave me hydrochlorate,(I think) I was under the impression it was for the swelling but then found out it was also a high blood pressure medicine. She doesn t seem concerned that my leg stays swollen, should I be? It just seems like it should heal faster than it does. Several years ago I missed the bottom step and hurt the ankle, but was able to walk away so thought I had no damage. Should I be more concerned

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Sometimes swelling can indicate a problem such as heart, liver, or kidney disease. Ankles that swell in the evening could be a sign of retaining salt and water because of right-sided heart failure. Kidney disease can also cause foot and ankle swelling. When kidneys are not functioning properly, fluid can build up in the body. Liver disease can affect the liver's production of a protein called albumin, which keeps the blood from leaking out of the blood vessels into the surrounding tissues. Inadequate albumin production can lead to fluid leakage. Gravity causes fluid to accumulate more in the feet and ankles, but fluid can also accumulate in the abdomen and chest.

If your swelling is accompanied by other symptoms, including fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight gain, see your doctor right away. If you feel short of breath or have chest pain, pressure, or tightness, call the doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
