What Causes Swelling In The Left Ankle?

My left ankle has been swollen since I got over a acute bout of gout (self-diagnosed) last week. My heart meds include Furosemide 40 mg. daily. Previous attempt to discontinue med resulted in same kind of swelling so meds resumed. Swelling totally disappears overnight.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Furosemide or a similar diurectic are very important in heart failure to prevent excess fluid from building in the body.

Heart failure would not cause swelling of one ankle however, it would be associated with bilateral swelling.

Causes of unilateral swelling include: (1) trauma to the ankle
(2)varicose veins in the ankle and/or leg
(3)infection
(4)arthritis- with a history of recent gout, it is possible that there may still be residual inflammation

If it continues or worsens, you should see your doctor for an assessment and treatment

I hope this helps
