What Causes Swelling In The Abdomen?

I have a swollen stomach - they say I have an enlarged liver. I had my appendix out in 1994 - it was ruptured and I developed peritonitis. I had my gallbladder out in 2013. Ever since I have a lot of diarrhea but my stomach seems to have a soft lump as well as it is bigger - I am a 55 year old woman. The doctors at hospital at the year ago mentioned hernia and my stomach makes sounds of gas churgling but only after eating certain foods. Nevertheless my liver is enlarged - I think they said around 22 or so. Is this a hernia - my mom had a hernia for over 20 years, was rushed to hospital, was misdiagnosed by the ER doctor as having to need life threatening hernia surgery, only to find out the next day that my mom actually had a heart attack based on the blood work. We challenged everything the hospital did in the 4 months and yet she never got out of there and still died - so I am very skeptical of hernia surgery, can you give me a diagnosis. I live in Canada and it is very hard to get a really good diagnosis by a doctor. thanks
