What Causes Swelling Around The Rib Cage?

My husband has a vein like swelling at side of his ribs, he has only recently been diagnosed with high cholesterol snd his liver has been tested since he started taking the tablets and all tests were normal.. He had changed his diet a lot and has lost about 1 and half stone weight. His Dr says his cholesterol levels are due to hereditary. Is this weight loss normal?

Hi,

I can understand your concern about your husband. As per your history this much weight loss is normal, as you said the diet modification was done. There will be further weight loss if he continues proper diet and exercise.

The appearance of blood vessels (veins) appear in abdominal region in chronic lever disease because of portal hypertension not on chest or rib cage area. If this blood vessel is near or around umbilical region it can be cause of concern for liver. Otherwise it may be either a normal vain or viscosity due to some other reason. You need to get it checked by a general physician and get it managed accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
