Portal hypertension

What is Portal hypertension?

Portal hypertension is the increase in pressure in the portal vein. Portal vein is the main blood vessel which supplies blood to the liver. The portal hypertension occurs in cases of esophageal varices, cirrhosis and non-cirrhotic fibrosis of liver. Treatment of underlying cause leads to decrease in portal hypertension.
