Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have suffered with inflammatory arthritis & ulcerative colitis for 10 years. My condition has remained stable until this week. The right ankle has become very swollen and painful. There is limited movement at this time and I wonder if I should seek medical attention from my Rheumatology unit . I am on a combination of Methotrexate, Sulfasalazine, Leflunomide & Folic Acid.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns. Concurrent presence of ulcerative colitis and inflammatory arthritis indicate that your immune system is at fault hence you are being prescribed Methotrexate, Sulfasalazine, leflunamide and Folic acid. Recent flare up of arthritis in one of the ankles indicate the altered immunity with some challenge causing enhancement of the problems. You need an altered or added medication say for example the oral steroids. So you have to consult the Orthodedic Surgeon for care of the joint and also the Rheumatologist. Ulcerative colitis can cause lots of deficiencies. Hence I would advise you to go for blood tests for all parameters as well as the vitamin levels and get therapeutic replacements as it help as antioxidants too.
