What Causes Swelling And Pain Around The Surgical Incision Site On The Neck?

To whom it may concern: I am a 27 year old male that is 6 3 and 278 lbs(I was 315 but I m getting my weight under control now). When I turned 24, A growth sprouted on my neck. I went to the ER and it turned out to be a large branchial cleft cyst. I opted to have surgery ASAP rather than wait. The surgery went well and I woke up with a drain taped to my chest and 2 surgical cuts in my neck. I recovered well and really started moving forward with my life until about a year after the surgery. My neck began to swell and hurt around the incision. I made an emergency appointment to see the MD who took it out. Turns out my body rejected the stitches and the cyst relasped except this time it occupied my lymphnoids as well. A second surgery was the only option. So the same site was opened and he removed more matter from my neck. I healed well but my neck always seemed to cramp and ache for no reason. Fast forward to today, My neck will go from aggravated to agonizing pain even if I move it the wrong way. I m really not wanting to see the same MD that performed both surgeries. What should I do? Thanks

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

You could go for a second opinion at another surgeon's office. It sounds like some sort of nerve damage issue. Gabapentin or similar pain medication may help.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anders Mark Christensen, General Surgeon
