What Causes Sudden Swelling Above The Ankle In The Leg?

hello, I just noticed on the back of my leg above my ankle some swelling, it looks like it bumps out when I look from side view in the mirror. Funny thing is right above it, it feels like an indentation in my leg so I know the swelling is not normal. Unless I have a strange leg and I never noticed this before, or should I be concerned?

Hi,
Welcome to HCM!

Are you sure there was no trauma? any accidental hit to your leg?

In case you were unknowingly hit on the leg, the swelling might be due to collection of blood. In that case, it will dissapear by itself within few days.

If there was no trauma, then most likely, you were bit by an insect in that leg region. If it is itching, you might take an antihistaminic tablet like cetrizine to get relief. Apart from that, nothing needs to be done and it will reduce by itself.

Another possibility is collection of pus (called Abscess). You will also develop fever in that case and the swelling will be painful. You'll be required to take a course of antibiotics.

That bump is most likely due to these causes.
Hence, I suggest you to wait for few days and see its progress. If even then is doesn't decrease, then you may visit your treating doctor.

Hope this information helps. Feel free to as if you have any doubt.

With warm regards,
Dr. Sridhar Reddy
