What Causes Sudden Lower Abdominal Pain And Diarrhea In The Elderly?

Hi, I had an unusual occurrence this weekend, with sudden attack of severe Abd. pain, felt like rolls of labor with diarrhea to follow. This came on around noon, 9 bouts with that next 24 hrs, no nausea, no fever. chills, and no vomiting. Sunday same thing, lower Abd. pain, with few attacks of diarrhea. Only had cereal that AM on Saturday. No seeds of any kind, but was wondering if it could have been a diverticulitis or losis attack? Had one bout with Diarr. this am, doing immodium, gator aide, very bland diet. I have worked in medical field for over 15 yrs. former employer was in a GI office, so have some general knowledge.I am 62, white female, with colonoscopy Dec. 2015, all good there.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, it must be an acute attack of gastroenteritis or infective diarrhea due to toxins from bacteria contaminating food items.

Such episodes usually resolve within few days and supportive therapy with good hydration, oral rehydration salts as well as probiotics but if persist may need antibiotics like ciprofloxacin or metronidazole.

For cramps, antispasmodic like Drotavarine can be helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
