My son is experiencing sudden onset left flank pain- right under rib area, made worse by movement. Otherwise, he is a very healthy well developed athletic man with no previous medical problems. What might this be caused by and should he seek medical attention?
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have sudden left sided flank pain . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like arthritis , pinched nerve in the back , muscle spasm , kidney infection , kidney stones , pancreatitis and inflammatory illnesses of the bowel .
I would suggest you to consult general practitioner for proper examination . Doctor will take history , see that in which direction pain is going , order kidney function test , blood test and ultrasound . For now apply warm compresses on back and upper abdomen and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain .
Doctor may refer you to nephrologist for kidney problem or orthopedic surgeon for nerve muscle and disc problem . Doctor may also refer you to gastroenterologist if there will be condition related to gastric problem .
