What Causes Stool Odor?

I've noticed in the past few days, my stool doesn't have a horrible odor, however it does smell like finger nail polish or finger nail polish remover. I havn't used any finger nail polish remover recently and the last time I painted my nails was about a 2-3 weeks ago. What could be causing this?

Hello,

The odor of stool is generated by the byproduct of bacterial breakdown of foods, as also a byproduct of bacterial metabolism, the things you eat and indigestion and so on. Hence, anything in one the causes can give different odors to the stool.

Another reason can be altered nasal smell sensation that one can get. If the problem persists then send the sample of stool for lab test to know the probable cause like intestinal infection and get treated accordingly.

If the stool test is normal, then alter the diet, foods, beverages, and avoid onions and garlic, nuts of any sort and see the effects. In a nutshell stop worrying.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
