What Causes Stabbing Pain And Dry Heaves While Having Stomach Ulcers?

My husband has a history of a stomach ulcer. A few hours ago he started getting sharp, stabbing like feelings in his stomach. He feels sick, but only dry heaves. He is feeling cold, but not clammy. He also feels pressure. He took tums, but that did not help at all. He drank half a glass of milk, but can not tell if that has helped either. Could my husband be having an ulcer attack? If so should he go the the emergency room?

Hi ! Good afternoon. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

If I were your doctor, with this kind of history, I would advise him not to eat spicy and fried food, and to avoid alcohol completely in case he consumes it. I would like to examine his abdomen clinically before going for investigations like a complete blood count, serum amylase, serum lipase, liver function tests, an X ray abdomen in the upright posture, and an ultrasound abdomen to rule out the most common causes of such pain abdomen. If all these are not conclusive, then I might go for a CT scan of abdomen, and would also consider for a possible endoscopic evaluation of the GI tract by a gastro-enterologist. Till then, I would advise you for an antispasmodic and a proton pump inhibitor drug for a possible symptomatic relief.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
