What Causes Spotting With Delayed Periods?

Hi I was suppost to start my period 1 week ago . I have been having brown spotting and thats it . I have always had heavy periods so this is not normal for me . I do not have any foul smells to the discharge . I did a urine pregnancy test today and it came back negative . I have been tired and a bit dizzy at times . I have other children and have had a false test before when I was indeed pregnant . My breasts dont hurt though .

Hello,
Thanks for writing to us. Since you have a history of negative pregnancy tests in the early days of your pregnancies, I would suggest taking the blood test for pregnancy as it is more sensitive and specific. In addition, a trans-vaginal sonogram will clarify if you are pregnant and if so, will give the age, location and viability of the pregnancy. If negative, this spotting suggests hormone imbalance which needs further evaluation. Hope this helps.
