What Causes Spotting And Cramping After Delayed Depo Shot?

To make it as short&sweet as possible:I have been on depo before when I was 15-16. No period, or PMS related symptoms. I am now 21, and got my first depo injection in May of this year. I was 2 weeks late recieving my second shot. During that two weeks, I had unprotected sex with my long term boyfriend...because Im on the shot and should be fine, right? The nurse that administered the second shot didnt give me a pregnancy test, and I was unaware that she should have. After my late shot/no condom fiasco, I have since spotted both light and heavy at random points since then. Its been 2 months since my last shot, and my cramps are horrible right now. Should I see my dr right away? Or am I safe to wait until my next shot is due to see him?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
I understand your concern.
Depot contraceptives are known to cause menstrual irregularity. After a rgular long use, Fertility returns & menstrual cycles come back to normal after 4-6 months of stopping the shot.
Looking all these points, pregnancy seems to be less possible, but you had delayed the shot after single shot only, Again severe cramping is unusual side effect, SO I would like you to consult your Gynecologist to exclude
Possibility of pelvic inflammation/ pregnancy immediately & then continue your next shot.
Thanks.
