Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my brother 48 had stroke november of 2016. He understands everything we say but cant talk, he uses hand gestures or nods to us , is this apraxia? if so is there help for him? Can it get better or go away? He also has paralysis in right leg, his knee buckles, would a brace help him? we dont care if he has a limp hes only 48 and wants to walk more than anything else
Good afternoon. Welcome to HCM. I have carefully gone through the medical history of your brother. He seems to have lesion in the dominant hemisphere (left posterior parietal cortex) . Right now he should be taking his antihypertensive medications if he has hypertension and other medication prescribed by his doctors. but to regain power and speech, most important is physical rehabilitation and speech therapy. there is no guarantee of hundred percent return of normal function but he can regain some motor activity and speech function too. This process takes time from weeks to year. So it is recommended to start physical rehabilitation and speech as soon as possible. and also followup with your doctor as knows the full history of your brother and the factors leading to stroke.
