What Causes Sore Throat And Swollen Lymph Nodes?

I ve had an upper respiratory infection since the beginning of December. It got better but then has relapsed twice. We are now in March and I feel terrible. My neck is sore, I assume, from swollen lymph glands, my throat is sore, my sinuses give me headaches and sometimes make my teeth hurt. I m blowing out green mucus and occasionally have a deep mucus-filled cough. I have an extensive history with allergies. When I called my doctor in January after the first relapse (it knocked me flat for two days - I couldn t get out of bed), they said the CDC was recommending no antibiotics for sinus infections or bronchitis and to just wait it out. I haven t been on antibiotics for years, but I m wondering if I should be on one for this. I just can t seem to kick it.

Hello,

If you have pain on the sinuses and thick green secretions for longer than 10 days antibiotics can be tried to help with the symptoms. Generally Augmentin is a good option and if allergic to it you can take doxycycline (they both need to be prescribed by your doctor).

As for the symptoms of sore throat and possible swollen lymphnodes you will need a doctor to examine you and confirm that the neck pain is due to lymphnodes. Sometimes mononucleosis can give sore throat and swollen lymphnodes for months and generally no treatment is needed for it as it settles down with time. You can have a blood test to rule out mononucleosis called monospot test.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
