What Causes Sore Throat Along With Dry Mouth And Swollen Lymph Nodes?

i have what I thought to be a sore throat but after about 5-6 days it continued and changed to a Very DRY & irritated throat and SEVERE DRY MOUTH the past 4-5 days. My right gland, just under the jaw, is visibly swollen. I started to drink a lot of water (usually drink almost none) for whatever sickness I thought I was coming down with. About 1-3, 16.9 fl oz a day to start then to 2-3 a day & now much more. I have also had a rapid weight loss of over 10+ pounds in less than a month or less. I am disabled and on medication in which I gained 50 lbs. and have not lost ,or gained, more than a pound or 2 in over 5 years. ( & I ve tried !) It seems like I have a severe sore throat that is hidden behind an even more severe dry throat and dry mouth. It is quite irritated. I was hoping to know what could cause a quite sudden weight loss as well as severe dry throat and dry mouth in which the water only helps for that time, When I drink it, I get an instant gratification but no more and still keep drinking with some hopes of it helping. I am disabled and 99% bedridden and sedentary. I do not get exercise and my eating habits are so bad. I will go all day not eating and then eat a big dinner. It has been explained to me that by doing this, the brain gets used to not getting the nutrients or protein it needs so, the brain goes into a fat storing type of phase. I ve been stuck in this for many years as well as a medication (I previously mentioned) in which weight gain is a symptom. (I have over done my body & its limitations before and have caused pain to myself on this same ride but never for a week!) The day the sore throat & swollen gland was at its worst I did have a hard day. I Drove (too many hours in a truck, in pain & uncomfortable) to the doctor, pharmacy and grocery store ( with help) but the day was hard and long for me and the next day I had full body aches like the flu can be at times, however, almost a week later I still have the full body aches. I do have a lot of medical issues mostly broken bones, surgeries 1 on leg, 1 hip, facial reconstruction and 3 back surgeries and current back issues plus. I don t know if any other issues could be involved but I never had anything like dry mouth, dry throat or rapid weight loss. Any ideas would be great and Thank you so very much for reading this book of a note, just trying to be honest and detailed to get the best answer, but am sorry 4 it :) Thank you so much for your time :) T

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain it looks like the symptoms are due to xerostomia or dry mouth. It can be due to a number of causes like severe dehydration, side effects of medications if you take any, salivary gland dysfunction, nerve damage supplying salivary glands, oral infections like thrush, Sjogren's syndrome etc. However your symptoms of swollen gland under the jaw seems to be probably due to salivary gland related problem and also you need to get your blood sugar levels checked.
-For dry mouth chew sugar free chewing gums.
-Drink plenty of water.
-Avoid regular mouthwash and use specialized mouthwash that are formulated for dry mouth patients like Biotene.
-You can also instil artificial saliva drops.
-Suck tart candies as it also stimulates saliva flow.

If does not improve consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
