What Causes Skin Rashes While On Amoxicillin?

Hi, I recently had some dental work done, crown prep and temporary crown. I developed an absess from the treatment. I was then prescribed amoxicillin. I now have a rash, hives and red patches. I believe I am allergic to the amoxicillin. If I stop, will the absess become worse? Should I continue with the amoxicillin? It is also Christmas Eve so the prospect of getting medical advice from my dentist or doctor is not going to happen. What do you think?

Hi..
Thanks for writing to us..

As per your complain it looks like you have an allergic reaction to Amoxicillin and it is only the cause of itchy rashes.

You should immediately stop taking amoxicillin and in case if the abscess is getting worse you can consult an Emergency room and get evaluated and they can advise you alternate antibiotics like Clindamycin, Ofloxacin-ornidazole combination etc for relieving infection..

However, in case if there is an abscess then only antibiotics will not provide you complete resolution and you need to consult an Endodontist and get evaluated and an x ray of tooth can be done..
It tooth can be saved then Root Canal Treatment of the tooth should be done followed by antibiotics and painkillers and once the infection subsides completely tooth can be capped..

Hope this information helps..

Regards.
