What Causes Sharp Popping Pain In The Sternum Of An Adolescent?

My daughter is 17, but she has been experiencing a popping in her left side of her chest under her breast since she was a young teenager. The pain comes on suddenly and is sharp. She can force a deep breath and it pops which stops the pain. The pop itself is quite painful. Her doctor told us when she was you that it would stop as she got older, but it has returned. We never found out the cause or if there is a remedy. Can you help us?

Thanks for contacting with your health concern.

1. As symptoms are aggravating it is wise to consult a chest specialist since symptoms are still persisting and as chest pain is related with chest wall, following should be the symptomwise approach:

i .Think of fracture of rib, new or old.
ii. Think of costochondritis, very common anteriorly
iii. Think of muscle sprain

PS. One may consult a Cardiologist to exclude precordial catch syndrome. [PCS] which is a nonserious condition affecting the left side of the anterior chest wall and/or pericarditis.

2. If by adopting
- hot water fomentation
- rest with minimal movements
- chest strapping
- intercostal nerve block
- taking an analgesic, anti-inflammatory enzymes, and muscle relaxant, the pain goes away continue with the same, however, if the pain is not relieved ask for Hb%, WBC, ESR & X-ray Chest

3. Other common causes to exclude is/are digestive issues [excess gas, gastritiis], stress.
