What Causes Sharp Pain In The Big Toe Joint?

I am having throbbing and sharp pain in my big toe joint where I had bunion surgery. It feels like a shooting pain. I have it 1-3 days before it goes away. Is there anything I can do to make this shooting pain go away? I did try ice on it for 20 min. on and off. It keeps me awake at night Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
I understand your concern.

The pain in your great toe seems to be because of acute gout.
If I were your treating doctor,I recommend,
-Analgesics like ibuprofen or naproxen twice a day
will help relieve the pain.Continue using local ice pack application for 15-30 minutes for 3-4 times a day.
Give rest to the joint.
Visit to rheumatologist/orthopaedician for physical examination and certain investigations to confirm the diagnosis.
If the pain doesnot resolves, narcotic analgesics and local corticosteroid injection in joints may have to be considered.
Oral anti inflammatory drugs like NSAIDs ,allopurinol will be required for maientance therapy.besides, diet high in uric acid like meat, legumes have to be avoided.

Hope this information helps.
Wish you good health.
