What Causes Severe Weakness In The Muscles?

My 65 yr old vegetarian mom is having lower extremity muscle weakness with falls. She does not black out but can feel her legs giving out. She now has 3+ pitting edema to her feet. She weighs about 130 lbs. Her b/p is averaging 132/68. The only medicine she is on is levothyroxine 112mcg. I am worried about MS. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Please get certain blood investigations done like TSH, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, complete blood picture, serum electrolytes, Liver function test and renal function test, fasting lipid profile. Get these tests done in the fasting blood sample.

Sometimes uncontrolled Hypothroidism, Vitamin B12 deficiency, Vitamin D deficiency, low hemoglobin levels can cause the symptoms you mentioned above. More chances of Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 deficiency, if she is vegetarian.

She needs to take supplements ideally. Please consult your primary care physician regarding this.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan, General & Family Physician
