What Causes Severe Pain In The Ribs While Suffering From Wheezing And Cough?

Hi, I have a history of upper respiratory infections. Last wk, I was sick. I recently started exercising and now, my ribs/chest are killing me, meaning, wheezing, coughing, chills and my chest is sore to touch. My question: should I be concerned? Should I seek out medical advice at our local urgent care?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Chest pain along with chills, wheezing and coughing are concerning for pneumonia (infection of lungs). It can be caused commonly either by a virus or bacteria.

Chest X-ray, sputum analysis and blood workup are needed at this point. It is also important to evaluate the need for antibiotics and to start the course of antibiotics if needed as soon as possible.

So, please be advised to follow up with your primary provider/urgent care. You can take Tylenol to relieve pain/chills.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal,
