What Causes Severe Leg Cramps?

I have a,huge problem with very severe leg cramps. After fifteen years and many doctors the problem has all but been eliminated. Now I find that my cholesterol is elevated and my doctor wants to put me on a statin (40mg - 7 days a week). Before he retired, my former doctor put me on a statin (10mg - 3 days a week). It brought my cholesterol down dramatically (from 240 to 165 in about a year), however my cramps became so severe that I could not tolerate it so the statin was discontinued. My cholesterol remained in the acceptable region for about five years but is now back up. Do you have any suggestions for me. I get lots of exercise and eat a healthy diet and am not overweight. Thank you for any suggestions you might have.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As many statins causes muscle cramps. So, I suggest you to take T.Prevalite OD(once daily). There is also an option for that you have to approach your physician for Non Statin drugs like Juxtapid but Liver function test should be checked before and after taking medicine and the drug should be prescribed after checking your health profile by a physician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
