What Causes Severe Leg Cramps After Taking Lactulose?

I was given lactulose to relieve constipation but have suffered from severe leg cramps since I started taking it on Friday. I ve stopped taking it now as I believe lactulose is causing my leg cramp but how long will it take before it s out of my system and I can be free of cramps? It s been 3 days and I m so sleep deprived and exhausted because of it :(

Hi,

I had gone through your question I can understand your concern about your issue.

It could be because of dehydration, as lactulose leads to the loss of water from your body and induces diarrhoea to reduce constipation.

Second reason may be the increase in potassium ion concentration because of the same reason.

You need to take plenty if fluids with ORS to maintain your electrolyte balance and body fluids. Visit a general physician if the cramps persist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
