What Causes Severe Itching In The Legs?

My husband is 80, retired, and has some aggression/senility and personality problems, exacerbated by itching skin on his legs. The two dermatologists he has seen can t identify the cause of the itch - assume it is psoriatic. We sold our farm in VA, and have moved in with my daughter and son-in-law. My husband s physician has prescribed some meds for his aggression, which - after time - don t work. I m caught in the middle of all this - his roaming at night through the house awakens the others here who must work. If you could suggest something to help with his itching skin, it might help everything else. For a while. His personality isn t improving either and I m worried about his increasing aggression - to me and the others in this house.

Hello,

Causes of your difficulties may be neuropathy or ischemic issues. Neuropathic are seen in diabetics or injury of spine nerves.

If this is not your case, then these symptoms are indicating circulatory problems in legs which are common in this age and there may be present atherosclerosis that obstructs blood vessels and causes pain and blisters to form.

You should do Doppler ultrasound of the leg or CT angiography to rule out such obstructive changes and then it can be treated properly by medications or by surgical and radiological procedures. Also, you should have Aspirin and have elastic stockings applied, and should avoid cold environment and long walks.

In most cases, it can be managed with medications but sometimes surgery may be required in severe cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein
