What Causes Severe Intolerance To Sound When Suffering From Fever?

My son had a fever for about 24 hours, the last spike of which was around 5:00 AM. He was remarking that sounds (like the fan in my room, which was running when he came in this morning) were too loud and it was quite upsetting for him. I gave him Motrin, put him to bed, and he has been fine all day. Now, he doesn t have an elevated temp but is saying that the fan in his room (which he usually cannot sleep without--we love our white noise) is too loud. Do children experience a heightened sense of sound when they are feverish and, if so, does this heightened sense go away when the feve abates?

yes children could be irritable when they have fever. Irritability shows up on specific activity like sound/noise,food,temperature..etc. it usually subsides along with fever and infection. Also heightened sensitivity to noise could be due fever accompanying ear infection. If your child had a blocked nose or cold the infection could spread to ear through Eustachian tube which can increase the cited symptom. Geting an ENT check up would be wiser.
