What Causes Severe Gagging And Shaking After Excessive Alcohol Consumption?

My husband drinks beer every day all day. He has classic symptoms of alcohol abuse like shaking when he wakes up until he has a beer or two. In the last six months he also has a gagging thing going on in the am. He starts coughing which makes him gag and often vomits a little liquid. This seems to be occurring more frequently. Sometimes this is accompanied by shaking of his whole body. He drinks about the same amount every day. What is causing the gagging and shaking to happen more? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Shaking and gagging after taking excess alcohol is indicative that the body has absorbed too much alcohol and is impacting the central nervous system and the gaga reflex. It may affect the breathing, heart rate, peripheral nervous system, etc. You are suggested to get him clinically examined to detect any developing peripheral neuropathy. Get him Nerve conduction tests, nerve biopsy and imaging (CT/MRI/EEG) done. Get him treated.

His treating doctor may suggest to detox from alcohol, get your husband connected to a detox center so that withdrawal symptoms can be managed urgently & he stays comfortable. He should go through a very gradual tapering process under medical supervision. Help him stay well fed and hydrated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
