Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
In 2009 I had a heart attack and 2 stents were put in. I work out daily and run 15 - 21 miles a week. My blood pressure before the attack was normal....so why am I on 25 mg of metoprolol? I am starting to have symptoms like fatigue and mood swings and memory loss.
Metoprolol is in the family of medications called beta blockers.
Beta blockers can vary but they generally affect the heart rate, blood pressure, how strong the heart contracts. In essence, they affect how hard the heart has to work.
This is the reason they are often use in persons with a history of a heart attack. By reducing the work load of the heart, they reduce the risk of recurrence.
If this beta blocker is not agreeing with you however, there are alternatives that can be used.
Also it would be best to make sure that there are no other causes for your symptoms before assuming that it is the medication. Underlying illness needs to be ruled out.
I hope this helps
