What Causes Severe Fatigue And Excessive Sleepiness?

Just curious, I am a 64-year-old male will be 65 in September. I have some medical insurance but will have better insurance once I m on Medicare. I live by myself (my wife passed away almost 2 years ago) and I am not on any prescription and never have been. Symptoms - for about the last three months or so (not sure) I have been very tired and sleep a lot maybe 10 hours at night and 1 to 2 hours during the day, I am retired. I seem to be a little bit more confused like looking for my keys, they were in my pocket, went to the car wash and thought I gave the guy a 20 he said it was 10 and I realized he was right, went to the grocery store and when I got home ha ha I had macaroni salad which I don t eat and I thought I ordered potato salad but who knows, and that was just today. Things like this has been going on for a little bit but today just seemed more than normal. I do realize you cannot give a real good diagnosis but any advice or opinion would help at this point. Thank you in advance, Gary

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

In my opinion, there is no reason to be worried and usually this is just temporary and self limiting. Excessive daytime sleepiness is common issues and should be considered in this case. Excessive daytime sleepiness may be caused by conditions such as sleep deprivation, metabolic disturbances, sleep apnoea, medications, neurological disorders such seizures and psychiatric disorders such depression.

If emotional causes are ruled out, then some tests can be done to confirm the diagnosis. In my opinion, polysomnography (sleep study), is one of the necessary examinations in order to achieve a correct diagnosis. Please discuss with the primary care Doctor about these issues.

Hope I have answered your query.
