What Causes Severe Diarrhoea After Taking Gabapentin?

I have been on gabapentin for about 15 yrs for neuropathy 500 mg twice a day and my Dr. just add another one. I have been on it for about 2 mo and I have been having diarrhea for about a month now. Soon after I eat I have to rush to the restroom. Could this be caused from adding the third gabagintin?

Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I have read your question fully and understand your concerns.

You are correct in thinking that Gabapentin is causing you to have the diarrhoea. Though some patients tolerate the lower doses of Gabapentin well, at higher doses they get side effects -diarrhoea is a side effect of Gabapentin.

You could stop the afternoon dose and continue with 500 mg twice a day as before. If your diarrhoea has still not settled after 5-7 days, kindly see your doctor for further evaluation. You should also see a doctor sooner if your diarrhoea is worsening, or you are having any bleeding from your anus (back passage).

I hope this answer has helped you.

Thank you
Regards
