What Causes Severe Diarrhea And Pain In The Lower Legs?

Starting Wednesday afternoon developed severe diarrhea with strong cramps to lower legs. By morning I had lost 11lbs (I weighed 180 before it began). Symptoms abated the next day only to resume Thursday evening, again severe diarrhea and foot and lower leg cramps to where I could barely walk, and the loss of another 5lbs. The leg cramps would abate after each trip to the toilet. Friday and Saturday both completely abated, but I was weak. Still tired, but gaining back strength each day. Food poisoning perhaps?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for your query on HCM

"As"per your clinical history is concerned please follow like this -

1)Do a clinical examination by your primary care Doctor and do few investigations like [CBC with differential and stool exam RE/ME]to confirm it.

2)Drink plenty of water to replace salts and electrolytes from your body. You can prepare it by mixing 6 teaspoonful sugar with half teaspoonful salt with one liter boiled water and drink it after every bowel movement and if it is not sufficient then take IV drip.

3)Discuss with your Doctor about prescription medication like [norfloxacin+metronidazole] to prevent loose motion with a probiotic[lactobacillus].

Do follow few lifestyle modifications like this -

1)Try to wash your hands before and after preparing food. In addition, wash your hands after handling uncooked meat, using the toilet, changing diapers, sneezing, coughing and blowing your nose. Use hand sanitizer when washing isn't possible. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when you can't get to a sink. Apply the hand sanitizer as you would hand lotion.

2)Serve food right away or refrigerate it after it has been cooked or reheated. Leaving food out at room temperature can encourage growth of bacteria. Wash work surfaces frequently to avoid spreading germs from one food item to another. Use the refrigerator to thaw frozen items.

3)Drink bottled water, soda, beer or wine served in its original container. Avoid tap water and ice cubes. Use bottled water even for brushing your teeth. Keep your mouth closed while you shower. Beverages from boiled water, such as coffee and tea, are probably safe. Remember that alcohol and caffeine can aggravate diarrhea and dehydration so try to avoid it.

Hope that helps
