What Causes Severe Cough Along With Fever?

I am a 69 year old female with a history of extreme drug sensitivity. I am allergic to penicillin and tetracycline. I have a cough (not in lungs been xrayed) and 4 weeks into this cough I started running a fever. In the last 3 days fever spiked to 101.8. Doctor had given me Z-pac 4 weeks ago to no avail. Today she prescribed 500 mg of levaquin. Question is: my fever is of unknown origin; I feel doctor prescribed levaquin because I had it about 4 years ago with no repercussions, isn t levaquin overkill?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you are having fever and cough most likely you are having an upper respiratory tract infection and therefore your chest X-ray is normal.

Tab Levaquin contains Levofloxacin which is very good for upper respiratory tract infection.

You should continue it and also take Tylenol for fever. Get a bloom culture done if fever does not subside.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
