What Causes Rise In Heart Rate And Pulse While Suffering From Acute Bronchitis?

I have just been diagnosed with acute bronchitis, which followed an asthma exacerbation last week. I just began a five-day treatment of antibiotics, along with a cough suppressant. I m noticing my pulse is elevated, about 84 bpm. Can difficulty breathing cause rapid heart rate? I m a female, age 69. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response

Dear Ma am,
Hi and Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for the rise in heart rate and pulse while suffering from acute bronchitis.

Incomplete data like drugs used to relieve asthma not mentioned and also the temperature.

There are two possibilities of increased in heart rate:

1. Bronchodilator medications (Salbutamol) can cause an increase in heart rate as its side effects.
2. High temperature (fever) due to acute bronchitis can itself be the cause of increase in heart rate

There is also a possibility of severity of bronchial asthma responsible for increasing heart rate.

Hope the explanation given above could answer your query.
Wishing you a very good health.
