Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Reduction In Progesterone Levels In Early Pregnancy?
My wifes HCG numbers are almost tippling every 48 hours, but her progesterone has dropped from 25 to 18 in a week and a half. She is 5 weeks pregnant and taking 200 mg prometrium suppositories each night. Can the progesterone continue to drop and still be viable? She has had 3 unexplaimed MC (less than 8 weeks) in the past, but this is the first time since then that the HCG numbers have looked so good.
Falling progesterone or HCG levels indicate miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Both these conditions should be ruled out. You have not mentioned your wife's progesterone levels. Maintaining a 25 ng/ml progesterone level during the first trimester of pregnancy reduces risk of miscarriage. Hence progesterone supplements are essential. Since you have mentioned history of recurrent abortions, the cause should be identified.
Genetic causes, immunologic causes, autoimmune diseases, uterine müllerian anomalies, infectious causes, smoking, endocrine factors such as diabetes mellitus and hematological disorders are some of the causes of recurrent abortions and must be ruled out.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
