What Causes Recurring Left Sided Pain From Lower Back To Foot?

I have pain in lower back on left side, left hip pain, left side of buttock, left pelvic pain and pain down the left leg to foot. It comes suddenly and goes away after a few days. It keeps me up at nght when I do have it. Gets real bad,(when I put weight on left leg) then can ease up within minutes with changing position. I am 78 yrs old and had a fall about 12 years ago that caused my tellbone to stay sore for months. Any ideas?

Hello,

The following are few probable causes of your pain:
1) Sciatic nerve compression
2) Lumbar spondylitis leading to sciatic nerve compression
3) Pyriformis syndrome
4) Herniation of lumbar intervertebral disc
5) Pelvic tumors

Most commonly you are suffering from sciatic nerve compression. The following are treatment options:
1) Pain relieving medication like NSAIDs like Ibuprofen or Naproxen to be taken twice daily for 14 days.
2) If you have bleeding problems or kidney disease, NSAIDs are not to be used.
3) Opioids like hydrocodone, oxycodone and Tramadol can be used twice daily for 14 days.
4) To prevent gastric irritation, take tab. Pantop 40 mg daily once before food.
5) Physical therapy is very useful by strengthening back muscles and thus decreases pain.

If your pain doesn't subside with in 14 days you may need to consult an orthopedic specialist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
