What Causes Recurrent Itchiness And Dark Discoloration Of The Hands And Feet?
Frequent itching of hands and feet. Episode durations of about ten minutes, occasionally longer. Usually occurs an hour of so after meal. Occasionally happens during sleep and it awakens me. Usually running cold water on hands/feet helps to stop the issue. Also notice both hands (from about where a wristwatch would be worn) appear darker/more tanned (as if I had been wearing long sleeve shirt in sun - I have not), while rest of arm is comparatively pale (like the rest of me). I am 52 and have experienced this for about two years. No changes to diet, exercise habits (weights and cycling), or meds (omeprazole and occasional/rare rescue inhaler use).
Hi. As per your case history you are having prurigo simplex. My treatment advice is - 1. Don't scratch the skin as it may worsen the condition. 2. As the complain is from 2 years, it is better to have investigations like complete blood count, thyroid function tests and blood sugar get done. 3. Apply a mild topical steroid cream like mometasone cream on affected skin. 4. Take an antihistamine medication like levocetrizine twice daily for itching. 5. Other treatment options are oral steroid like prednisone and higher antihistamines like hydroxyzine taken only after consulting a dermatologist.
Thanks. Dr. Harshit bhachech. MBBS, DDVL.
