What Causes Recurrent Fever Despite Taking Medication?

My daughter - age 12 - has been running a fever for over a week now. Highest it s been is 102.5. Fever medicine brings it down but then it wears off and the fever comes back. Coughing a lot too. Urgent care has diagnosed her with bronchitis and prescribed cough syrup with codine, which knocks her out and antibiotics, which give her diarrhea! Is it common to run a fever for this long with bronchitis or should I be concerned it s something else? Thanks!

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Fever with bronchitis is common.Bronchitis and other respiratory infections are mostly caused by viruses and symptomatic treatment is always enough. However, bacteria infection is common and will justify antibiotics.Persistence of fever with antipyretics and antibiotics may suggest
*the germ in cause is not responding to the antibiotic.
* It could be caused by an atypical or infra-cellular germ.
Antibiotics treatment may at time have as side effects diarrhea. This is common with amoxicillin which is well indicated in respiratory infections too.
I will suggest you try the following:
-Continue with the antibiotic she is taking
-Take an anti-pyreric like efferalgan
-Add a steroid like prednisolone for say 5 days
-An anti-allergic like benadryl
-Avoid cold, dust and smoke
If the fever persist, you see the Doctor for a change of antibiotic or to try a second line treatment with a macrolide like azithromycine and if need be culture and sensitivity test.
Hope this will help
Best regards
