What Causes Rectal Bleeding?

I went to our local ER 1 week ago today. Had rectal bleeding burgundy looking blood. Had had for 2 days but never thought about it till that day. Have had distention and some nausea. Went to Fayettville VA clinic a week earlier where the doctor was seeing me for Gastroperesis. He had put me on Phillips colon health probiotics and told me that I should take twice a day. That is the only thing new that I am aware of. My meds for Gastroperesis is Miralax, Linzess, Simethacone, Phillips colon health probiotics. I have had abdominal pain to right of belly button and a lot of lower back pain. Did a CT of abdomen and hgb which was fine per doctor. HGB was 13. I left that night due to a talk to be given by me early next morning. Abdominal surgeries are TVH still have ovaries, gall bladder removed and Gastric bypass 6 years ago without problems. Last colonoscopy about 4 years ago, next one due 2019. Was a poor prep. Have IBS since 1985, diverticulosis, colon polyps, Reflux and Hiatal hernia. I think? that is it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You have a history of diverticulosis, sometimes diverticula become inflamed and bleed causing blood in the stool. Get evaluated before it complicates into symptoms like painful cramps, disturbed bowel movements. Get colonoscopy and CT scan abdomen done.

In the meantime, take high fiber diet, fruits, veggies, whole grain and drink plenty of water. Other symptoms of rectal bleeding can be hemorrhoids, anal fissures, IBS. Get examined physically, take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K,
